Why Guyana Looks the Way It Does

English is the official language of the only South American country where that is true, and the reason lies in the colonial order of the coast. Dutch settlers came first, in the seventeenth century, raising plantations on a swampy plain they drained with dikes and sluices in the manner of home; Britain seized the colonies during the Napoleonic wars and consolidated them as British Guiana in 1831. The engineering stayed. Much of Georgetown and the sugar belt behind it sit below sea level, kept dry by sea walls and kokers, and the population — a small fraction of the national total — still crowds that narrow coastal strip, because inland the ground rises into forest no plantation could clear.

That forest is the country's real bulk: roughly nine-tenths of Guyana is rainforest standing on the Guiana Shield, some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth, cut by rivers that fall off the plateau in extraordinary drops — Kaieteur Falls, a single plunge of about 226 m, is among the tallest of its kind anywhere. The interior was never surveyed thoroughly, which is why the borders are the continent's most contested. Venezuela claims all the land west of the Essequibo River, about two-thirds of the country, on the strength of an 1899 arbitral award it has never accepted; Suriname disputes the southeastern corner. The wedge on the map is thus an unresolved proposition as much as a surveyed fact.

For drawing purposes the country behaves like a tilted triangle: a thin, damp brim of coast, a long western edge following the Essequibo country, and a broad forested base pressed against Brazil. Get the coastal strip thin and the interior heavy, and the sketch reads as Guyana even if the disputed lines wobble.

What is "Drawing Guyana from Memory"?

Drawing Guyana from memory means sketching Guyana's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Guyana sits in South America and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Guyana is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Guyana is a compact wedge on the Atlantic shoulder of South America, with a low, muddy coastal strip along the north, forested highlands rising inland, and long land borders against Venezuela to the west and Brazil to the south.

How to Draw Guyana from Memory

Step 01

Place Guyana as a compact wedge on the north coast of the continent, with the Atlantic forming its only coastline along the top. It sits squeezed between Venezuela on the west and Suriname on the east, so draw it narrow where it meets the sea and broader where it pushes inland, keeping the whole country small and squat.

Step 02

The interior is dominated by the Guyana Shield, an ancient, forested plateau that rises toward the south and gives the country its rugged heart. Sketch this highland mass as a broad swell of land filling the southern two-thirds, with the flat, swampy coastal plain kept as a thin strip across the top, dotted with the waterfalls and rapids that spill off the plateau.

Step 03

Lock the outline with its real neighbors and one famous feature: the Essequibo River basin fills the western side along the long border with Venezuela, and the flat coastal plain slides east into Suriname. Keep the border with Brazil long and gently bowed along the southern base, so the whole country reads as a wide, low triangle.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

A tilted wedge hung on the continent's northeast shoulder: a flat Atlantic brim on top, jungle highlands below, and Brazil shoving up hard from the south.

How Guyana Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Guyana's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Guyana is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
