What is Country Draw?

Country Draw is a free geography drawing game that tests something most quizzes skip — your mental picture of country shapes. You're given a country's name: no map, no reference outline, no neighbouring borders. You sketch its outline on a blank canvas, hit Submit, and the real border is drawn over your sketch. You then get a 0–100 score based on how closely your drawing matches the actual country.

Unlike flag-guessing or capital-matching games where you can narrow things down by elimination, this is real recall: can you actually remember what Italy looks like? How the boot kicks south, how the Horn of Africa curves, how Japan chains from north to south? To draw the country from memory you have to hold its whole silhouette in your head — orientation, proportions, the character of the coastline — and put it down stroke by stroke before the reveal shows you how close you really got.

Anyone can start in seconds. You can draw any of the 195 countries from memory, or take the daily challenge that gives every player the same shape on the same date. Whether you're revising for a geography exam, training your sense of the map, or just curious how much of the world you've actually absorbed, Country Draw turns the question into a number — and beating your last score is a quietly addictive way to learn the world's outlines.

How to Play Country Draw

Each round takes about 30 seconds. Here's the full loop, from blank canvas to final score.

01

Pick a Country

Choose any country from the grid above, or take on today's Daily Challenge. You'll only see the country's name — no map, no hints.

02

Draw the Outline

Sketch the country's border from memory on the blank canvas. Use Undo to fix a stroke and Clear to start over.

03

Submit Your Drawing

Hit Submit. The real border is drawn over your sketch so you can see exactly where you nailed it and where you drifted.

04

Get Your Score

You receive a 0–100 accuracy score with a Matched / Missed / Extra breakdown and a rating from "Try again" to "Cartographer."

New to sketching nations from memory? Our step-by-step guide on how to play walks through the whole loop, and the pro tips for drawing country borders cover tricks for tricky outlines — Italy's boot, Chile's narrow spine, the jagged shape of the United Kingdom. Start with compact countries like France or Germany, then work up to elongated and island shapes as your eye for the map sharpens.

How Does the Scoring Work?

When you submit, your sketch and the real country border are compared in the same canvas space, point by point. Two things are measured:

Matched (coverage)

How much of the real border your drawing reaches. A high Matched percentage means you captured the country's full outline — its bays, points, and overall extent.

Extra (overshoot)

How much of your drawing falls outside the real border. Wandering far from the true edge raises Extra and lowers your score.

Missed is simply the border you didn't reach (100 − Matched). These three values combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score, shown with a rating: 0–39 Try again · 40–59 Getting there · 60–79 Border patrol · 80–100 Cartographer.

Tip: draw the country large and roughly centered. Your sketch is scored against the real border in the same canvas space, so a tiny or off-center drawing will overlap less of the true border and score lower.

Tips to Improve Your Country Draw Score

Want to boost your Country Draw accuracy? These strategies will help you draw country borders more precisely and increase your score:

🎯 Start with Distinctive Features

Look for memorable landmarks before you draw. Italy's boot, Chile's long spine, or the UK's jagged islands. Anchor your drawing with these recognizable shapes first, then fill in the surrounding borders.

📏 Draw Large and Centered

Fill most of the canvas with your country outline. A tiny sketch in the corner scores lower because it covers less of the real border when compared. Think big — use the full space available.

🗺️ Study the Map First

Before playing Country Draw, spend 30 seconds looking at the real country on a map. Close your eyes and visualize its shape. Which direction does it stretch? Where are the major bays or peninsulas?

✏️ Use Simple Shapes

Don't try to draw every coastal detail. Approximate complex coastlines with simpler curves. Your Country Draw score rewards overall shape accuracy more than tiny edge details.

🔄 Practice Repeatedly

Draw the same country multiple times in Country Draw. Each attempt sharpens your mental map. Notice which parts you consistently miss and focus your memory there next time.

🧭 Learn Orientation

Know which way the country faces. Is Russia wider or taller? Does Japan run north-south or east-west? Getting the basic orientation right in Country Draw dramatically improves your score.

Ready to test these tips? Try the Country Draw game now and see your accuracy improve. Start with simpler shapes like France or Germany, then challenge yourself with more complex borders like Indonesia or Norway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Country Draw?
Country Draw is a free geography drawing game where you sketch a country's border from memory on a blank canvas. When you submit, the real border is drawn over your sketch and you get a 0–100 score. Unlike trivia or multiple-choice quizzes, it tests your mental picture of what countries actually look like.
How is my score calculated?
Your drawing is compared with the real country border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Matched measures how much of the border you covered, Extra measures how much of your drawing fell outside it, and Missed is the border you didn't reach. These combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score, shown in your result.
Does the size or position of my drawing matter?
Yes. Your sketch is scored against the real border in the same canvas space, so draw the country large and roughly centered. A tiny drawing tucked in a corner will score lower because it overlaps less of the true border.
How does the Daily Challenge work?
Each day the game highlights one country, chosen by date, so every player gets the same country on the same day. Draw it from memory and try to beat your best score. A global leaderboard is coming soon.
Can I play Country Draw on mobile?
Yes — Country Draw works on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Use your finger to draw on touchscreens. No app download is required; it runs directly in your browser.
Is Country Draw free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Pick a country and start drawing right away. Your recent scores are saved locally in your browser.
Can I score every country right now?
All 195 countries are open for drawing practice. Automated 0–100 scoring is rolling out country by country — the featured grid on the homepage has live border comparison today, and each country page tells you whether scoring is ready yet. In the meantime, every country page shows the real outline so you can check your own drawing.
What is the best way to practice drawing countries from memory?
Start with compact, simple shapes like France or Germany. Study the country on a map, then close it and try drawing from memory. Focus on distinctive features — Italy's boot, Chile's narrow spine, the UK's jagged coastline. Practice drawing of country outlines regularly, and you'll build a sharper mental map over time.
Which countries are easiest to draw in Country Draw?
France and Germany are great starter countries in Country Draw — both have compact, memorable shapes. Australia is also beginner-friendly with its distinctive outline. Avoid starting with Russia, Indonesia, or Japan until you've built confidence with simpler borders.
Can I draw countries with islands in Country Draw?
Yes! Countries like Japan, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia include their major islands. You don't need to draw every tiny island — focus on the main landmasses. Country Draw scores your overall shape accuracy, not microscopic coastal details.
Why is my Country Draw score low even though my drawing looks right?
Two common reasons: (1) Your drawing is too small — fill most of the canvas to maximize overlap with the real border. (2) Your drawing is off-center — position it where the actual country appears on the canvas. Draw large and centered for the best Country Draw score.
How accurate do I need to be to get 100% in Country Draw?
A perfect 100% score in Country Draw is very difficult — it requires covering the entire real border while staying within its boundaries. Most players score between 40-80%. Scores above 80% earn the "Cartographer" rating and show excellent geographical memory.
