Why Oman Looks the Way It Does
Musandam gives the outline away before anything else does: a jagged Omani peninsula at the Strait of Hormuz, separated from the Omani heartland by the United Arab Emirates and connected to it by nothing. The strait narrows to about thirty-three kilometers between Musandam's cliffs and the Iranian shore, and everything moving into or out of the Gulf passes in sight of it, which is why the mouth of the Gulf has been worth holding since the Portuguese commanded Hormuz in the sixteenth century. The enclaves even nest: the Omani territory of Madha sits inside the UAE, and the Emirati village of Nahwa sits inside Madha.
Everything else is a long edge on the water. Roughly 3,200 kilometers of coast — the longest of any mainland Arabian state — runs down the Gulf of Oman, around the bulge of Ra's al-Hadd and along the Arabian Sea to Dhofar, backed inland by the Hajar Mountains, whose peaks rise just above three thousand meters. Behind the range the land drops to gravel plains and, in the south, to the rim of the Empty Quarter, where the border with Saudi Arabia crosses sand that offers no features to mark it.
The interior was, until the Jebel Akhdar campaign of the 1950s, largely outside the Sultan's control: the Imamate ruled the mountains and oasis towns, and what the British called Muscat and Oman was effectively two jurisdictions with a line between them. That history, and a maritime empire that ran from Zanzibar to Gwadar, left a state oriented to the sea rather than the desert. Two disconnected pieces on the page, drawn in that order — the big coastal wedge, then the detached tip — keep the sketch honest.

What is "Drawing Oman from Memory"?
Drawing Oman from memory means sketching Oman's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.
Oman sits in Middle East and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Oman is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.
Oman is split into a large main territory occupying the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula and the separate Musandam Peninsula exclave jutting into the Strait of Hormuz, with a long coastline on the Arabian Sea.
How to Draw Oman from Memory
Step 01
Draw the main body of Oman as a broad wedge filling the southeast corner of Arabia, with its long southern coast running along the Arabian Sea and its western border with Saudi Arabia slanting inland. Start with this big, solid mass before worrying about the exclaves, and the rest of the country hangs off it like a pair of separate pieces.
Step 02
Add the dominant coastal curve: Oman's eastern shore bulges out into the Arabian Sea as a smooth arc, then turns north along the Gulf of Oman. The interior rises toward the Hajar Mountains, so let the outline swell slightly inland before the coast sweeps around, and Oman's curving, rounded profile appears on its own.
Step 03
Draw the detached Musandam Peninsula as a separate, jagged hook thrusting into the Strait of Hormuz, separated from the main body by the UAE. The UAE sits in the gap between the two Omani pieces, so keeping that wedge of Emirati coast between them anchors Oman's split layout perfectly and keeps the two halves distinct.
Oman is two parts: the big body wedges Arabia's southeast corner, the Musandam Peninsula dangles at the Strait of Hormuz, and a tiny enclave hides inside the UAE.
How Oman Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Oman's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Oman is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
