How to Draw the Flag of South Africa Step by Step

Six colors in a sideways Y: red on top, blue below, a green horizontal Y whose arms run to the hoist, and a black triangle edged in yellow — the "rainbow" flag of 1994.

Step 1

Draw the Outline

Start with a rectangle wider than it is tall — about 3 units wide for every 2 tall. This is the frame every part of the flag fits inside.

Step 2

Fill In the Background

The field of the South Africa flag is white — leave the paper blank and let the border do the work.

Step 3

Add the Stripes

The top half of the rectangle is red and the bottom half is blue. Over them lies a green Y lying on its side — a pall — outlined in white: two green arms running from the top and bottom of the hoist that meet in a single green band to the fly. Draw the red and blue halves first, then add the white-edged green Y on top.

Step 4

Add the Emblem

Finish where the Y meets the hoist: a black triangle sitting on a wider yellow triangle, pointing from the hoist edge toward the centre. The black starts at the very edge; the yellow frames it. That six-color Y is the whole trick of the South African flag — one of the hardest flags in the set.

💡 Detail too hard freehand? Switch the canvas above to Tutorial mode — the emblem's light-gray guide appears right on the drawing surface, so you trace first and draw from memory second.

Using This Page for School

Drawing the South Africa flag is a homework classic — national day posters, art class, geography projects. The three things graders actually look for:

  • Composition — a full, straight-edged rectangle with even margins, in the right proportions.
  • Flat, even color — no white gaps inside the stripes; fill large areas before details.
  • A simplified but correctly placed emblem — use the step pictures above, and check placement against the real flag.

Print the outline and trace it first, color it with the crayon guide, then draw it from memory on the canvas to check that it stuck.

South Africa Flag Drawing FAQ

How do you draw the South Africa flag step by step?
In four steps: Start with a rectangle wider than it is tall — about 3 units wide for every 2 tall. This is the frame every part of the flag fits inside. The field of the South Africa flag is white — leave the paper blank and let the border do the work. Finish where the Y meets the hoist: a black triangle sitting on a wider yellow triangle, pointing from the hoist edge toward the centre. The black starts at the very edge; the yellow frames it. That six-color Y is the whole trick of the South African flag — one of the hardest flags in the set. The full walkthrough with pictures is above.
What colors are on the South Africa flag?
The South Africa flag uses 6 colors: white (#FFFFFF), red (#DE3831), navy blue (#002395), dark green (#007A4D), yellow (#FFB612) and black (#000000). The color table above maps each one to the closest crayon or pencil, and the game's palette covers all of them.
Is the South Africa flag hard to draw?
The South Africa flag is one of the hardest flags in the set. Six colors in a sideways Y: red on top, blue below, a green horizontal Y whose arms run to the hoist, and a black triangle edged in yellow — the "rainbow" flag of 1994. Use Tutorial mode first — a light gray guide of the design appears on the canvas to trace — then switch to Challenge mode and draw it from memory.
How is my South Africa flag drawing scored?
Your colored drawing is compared against the real South Africa flag in the same canvas space. Matched is how much of the design you covered, Extra is how much of your drawing fell outside it, and Missed is the design you didn't reach — combined into a single 0–100 accuracy score. Placement matters more than exact shades.
Is South Africa flag drawing a common school activity?
Yes — drawing the national flag is a classic school activity, especially around national holidays and observance days, and it shows up in art and geography classes year round. This page is built for it: Tutorial mode turns the flag into a no-score tracing exercise, and the printable outline makes a ready-made coloring sheet for the whole class.
What makes a good South Africa flag drawing for a school competition?
Three things win flag-drawing competitions: a full, well-proportioned rectangle; flat, even color with no white gaps; and a clean simplified emblem placed exactly where the real flag puts it. Trace the outline first, fill large areas before details, and use the color table above so the shades read as official.
