How to Play Country Draw

Country Draw is a fun and educational game where you draw the shape of a country, and our intelligent recognition system tries to guess which country you drew!

Getting Started

  1. Visit the Game Page - Navigate to the main game interface
  2. See the Daily Challenge - Check out today’s featured country in the golden pill on the left
  3. Start Drawing - Use your mouse or finger to draw on the canvas

Drawing Tips

Use Your Mouse or Touch

  • Desktop: Click and drag to draw
  • Mobile: Touch and drag with your finger
  • Precision: Draw slowly for more accurate shapes

Think About Shape

Remember these key features when drawing:

  • Aspect Ratio: Is the country tall and narrow (Chile, Italy) or wide (Russia, Canada)?
  • Islands: Does it have multiple parts (Japan, Philippines, Indonesia)?
  • Distinctive Features: Boot shape (Italy), triangle (India), long coast (Norway)?

Canvas Controls

  • Undo Button: Remove your last line (also Cmd/Ctrl + Z)
  • Clear Button: Start over completely (Esc or C key)
  • Guess Country Button: Submit your drawing for recognition (Enter key)

The Recognition Process

After you click “Guess Country”, our algorithm analyzes:

  1. Bounding Box: Overall width and height
  2. Shape Characteristics: Vertical, horizontal, or compact
  3. Complexity: Number of lines and detail level
  4. Comparison: Matches against 195+ countries

Confirming Your Drawing

After the guess:

  1. Review the Top Guess: See what the system thinks it is
  2. Check the Dropdown: View the top 10 possible matches with confidence scores
  3. Correct if Needed: Select the right country from the dropdown
  4. Add Your Name: Optionally sign your drawing
  5. Confirm: Click to finalize and see if you were correct!

Scoring

  • 80%+ confidence = “I’m pretty sure!” 🎯
  • 60-79% confidence = “Looks like…” 🌍
  • 40-59% confidence = “Maybe?” 🤔
  • <40% confidence = “Could it be?” 🧐

Daily Challenge

Every day features a new country to draw! Look for the golden trophy pill on the left side:

  • Click it to dismiss and see today’s challenge
  • Try to draw it as accurately as possible
  • Challenge your friends to do the same!

Tips for Better Results

1. Focus on Proportions

The recognition algorithm heavily weighs the aspect ratio (width vs height). Get this right and you’re halfway there!

Good examples:

  • Chile: Very tall, very narrow (1:7 ratio)
  • Russia: Very wide (1.8:1 ratio)
  • Egypt: Almost square

2. Add Distinctive Features

Include unique characteristics:

  • Italy’s “boot” heel and toe
  • Florida peninsula for USA
  • Scandinavian coastlines for Norway

3. Don’t Over-Detail

You don’t need to draw every tiny island or border detail. Focus on the main shape.

4. Use Multiple Strokes

Breaking your drawing into several lines often produces better results than one continuous line.

5. Size Doesn’t Matter

The canvas normalizes your drawing, so a tiny sketch works just as well as a large one.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Drawing too fast - Slow, deliberate strokes are more accurate ❌ Wrong proportions - A wide Chile will confuse the system ❌ Too simplified - Some detail helps (coastlines, peninsulas) ❌ Missing orientation - Rotate in your mind: is it vertical or horizontal?

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Enter - Guess Country / Confirm
  • Esc or C - Clear canvas
  • Cmd/Ctrl + Z - Undo last line

Have Fun!

Remember, this is about learning and having fun with geography. Don’t worry if the system doesn’t guess correctly - use it as a learning opportunity to understand what makes each country’s shape unique!
