Why Norway Looks the Way It Does

Past 100,000 kilometers — that is the length of Norway's coastline once every fjord, strait and island is counted, one of the longest shorelines on Earth for a country of its size. Measured as a smooth line the same coast runs only a couple of thousand kilometers; the difference is the ice's work, and it is the single most important fact about how the country looks.

Ice sheets moving west to the sea excavated trenches well below today's water level, and when they melted the Atlantic flooded in, drowning U-shaped valleys as fjords. The Sognefjord reaches about two hundred kilometers inland and drops more than a kilometer deep; ships sail it for days past villages with no road along the shore. Behind the fjords the Scandes rise as a hard wall along the Swedish border, so the country is a narrow, steep shelf caught between a mountain spine and a sea full of islands.

The same arithmetic explains Norwegian history. A coast of islands needs boats rather than roads, which is why the Viking age and the modern oil state both grew out of the same fjord geometry — crude from the North Sea fields after 1969 turned a fishing nation into one of the wealthiest on Earth — and why the Gulf Stream keeps the harbors of Lofoten and Tromso open in winter while the Baltic freezes. Reproducing that edge from memory, count fjords rather than kilometers: a long narrow strip with a ragged Atlantic side, a clean Swedish side, and a flat Arctic plateau capping the top.

What is "Drawing Norway from Memory"?

Drawing Norway from memory means sketching Norway's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Norway sits in Europe and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Norway is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Norway is an extremely long, narrow country running down the western side of Scandinavia, with a deeply fjord-scalloped coast, a broad southern region, and a long tail reaching far into the Arctic.

How to Draw Norway from Memory

Step 01

Norway is all about length: it stretches from the Baltic south of Oslo all the way past the North Cape in the Arctic, farther north than any other European mainland point. Start with a long, narrow vertical strip, wider in the south and tapering as it runs north, and the country's identity is already established. Let the extreme length be the first thing you capture.

Step 02

Make the west coast the star: it is eaten away by thousands of fjords, so the Atlantic side of the strip should be drawn as a deeply jagged, crenellated line with long narrow inlets cutting far inland. The east coast along Sweden is comparatively smooth, giving Norway its jagged-west, calm-east contrast that makes it unmistakable. That contrast of coasts is what every map shows.

Step 03

Anchor the shape with its neighbors: Sweden runs along the entire eastern border, Finland and Russia touch the far northeast, and Denmark lies just across the narrow Skagerrak to the south. Those fixed points, plus the Arctic Ocean capping the north, hold Norway's long silhouette firmly in place on every map. The fixed frame keeps the long strip from wandering.

A long, fjord-chewed strip hanging off Scandinavia: Norway is a narrow spine of mountains with a broad southern head near Oslo and a long tail stretching into the Arctic.

How Norway Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Norway's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Norway is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
