Why Japan Looks the Way It Does

Subduction made Japan. The Pacific Plate dives beneath the north of the country along the Japan Trench and the Philippine Sea Plate dives beneath the south along the Nankai Trough, and the folding and melting produced by that double collision has pushed a chain of volcanic islands up from the seabed. The archipelago's crescent is the surface trace of the trenches: an arc bowing around the Sea of Japan from Hokkaido in the northeast to Kyushu in the southwest, with earthquakes, hot springs and constantly reworked coastlines as the by-products.

Roughly three-quarters of the land is mountainous and most of that is too steep to build on, which is why Japanese cities crowd the coastal plains so tightly. The Kanto plain around Tokyo is the largest lowland in the country and has grown into one of the largest urban areas in the world; every other region repeats the pattern, with rail lines and farms filling the valleys and the forested interior left almost empty. Mountains cover most of the map, but nearly everyone lives at its edge.

Between Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu the sea threads inland as the Seto Inland Sea, a sheltered waterway several hundred kilometers long and dotted with islands, which carried Buddhism, writing and continental craft to the early Japanese court. When the pencil goes down, make the arc first and the islands second: fix the curve, hang Honshu's long bow on it, cap the top with Hokkaido, and let Shikoku and Kyushu sit where the arc bends inland.

What is "Drawing Japan from Memory"?

Drawing Japan from memory means sketching Japan's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Japan sits in Asia and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. When you hit Reveal, your sketch is scored 0–100 against the real border, so every attempt teaches you something about the outline.

Japan is a crescent of islands curving along East Asia's Pacific edge — dominated by the long, arched main island of Honshu, with Hokkaido capping it in the north and Kyushu and Shikoku finishing the arc in the southwest.

How to Draw Japan from Memory

Step 01

Japan isn't one island — it's an archipelago that curves like a crescent along the Pacific coast of East Asia. The whole chain runs roughly northeast to southwest, and that overall arc, not any single island, is what you should draw first. Think of the country as one long, comma-shaped stroke of land before you split it into parts.

Step 02

Break the crescent into its four big islands: Honshu is the long, dominant middle; Hokkaido is the bulky cap at the top; and below Honshu's western end sit the smaller pair of Kyushu and Shikoku, side by side. You don't need the thousands of tiny islets — the four main pieces capture the recognizable shape.

Step 03

Honshu, the largest island, is a long curve that runs northeast-southwest and carries most of Japan's length. Hokkaido sits above it like a slightly blocky head, connected by the narrow Tsugaru Strait, while the whole eastern coast faces the open Pacific — a deep, nearly straight blue line that gives the crescent its clean outer edge.

How Japan Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Japan's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Drawing large and roughly centered is the single fastest way to raise your score — a small sketch tucked in a corner overlaps less of the true border, so it scores lower.
