Why Costa Rica Looks the Way It Does

Nowhere in Central America do the two oceans come closer, and the closeness is the whole story of the country: at its narrowest, only about 120 km of land separates Caribbean surf from Pacific, a gap a fit walker could cross in a day and a half. That narrowness is recent. The isthmus rose out of the sea only about three million years ago, and when it did it staged one of biology's great collisions — animals that had evolved on separate continents for tens of millions of years walked into each other. Armadillos, porcupines and opossums moved north; cats and their kin moved south; Costa Rica became a mixing zone where monkeys and toucans share forest with species whose ancestry lies in the Andes.

Because the land bridge is young, it is also unfinished. The Cocos plate dives beneath the Caribbean here, and the subduction has stacked four parallel cordilleras across so short a distance that peaks near 3,800 m stand within sight of both coasts; earthquakes are frequent, and the whole block is still being pushed and tilted. The tilt shows in the two shorelines: the Pacific side crumpled into peninsulas and gulfs, Nicoya and Osa chief among them, while the Caribbean side stayed straight and low, a shelf of sediment with a single short stretch of frontage.

Rivers fixed the northern limit — the San Juan, which the 1858 treaty with Nicaragua made the boundary, costing Costa Rica most of the Caribbean coast its map might otherwise have had — and the southern line with Panama came from arbitrated compromises beginning in the 1880s. The outline, in other words, is tilt and treaty rather than ocean. Anyone attempting it from memory should think in terms of a closing jaw: coasts far apart at Nicaragua, pinching together toward Panama, with the Pacific doing all the wrinkling.

What is "Drawing Costa Rica from Memory"?

Drawing Costa Rica from memory means sketching Costa Rica's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Costa Rica sits in North America and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 2 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Costa Rica is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Costa Rica is a compact, tilted block spanning the isthmus, with a fairly straight Caribbean coast on the east, a Pacific coast broken by the blunt Nicoya Peninsula on the west, and a gentle taper toward Panama.

How to Draw Costa Rica from Memory

Step 01

Costa Rica is a narrow bridge between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south, so begin with two roughly parallel coasts running northwest to southeast: the Caribbean on the east and the Pacific on the west, gently pinching together as they approach the Panama border.

Step 02

The Nicoya Peninsula is the dominant feature, a blunt, roughly rectangular thumb jutting west into the Pacific from the northern half of the country. Draw it first, then add the smaller, rounder Osa Peninsula near the southern end so the two peninsulas bracket the Pacific side.

Step 03

Lock the shape with its neighbors: the border with Nicaragua runs fairly straight east to west across the top, while the border with Panama curves along the bottom. Costa Rica is widest just below Nicaragua and narrows steadily toward Panama, so keep the two coasts drawing closer as you go south.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

Two coasts pinched around a narrow spine: the Pacific stretches long on one side, the Caribbean short on the other, with Nicoya jabbing west.

How Costa Rica Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Costa Rica's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Costa Rica is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
