Why United States Looks the Way It Does

In 1803 the United States bought from France, for fifteen million dollars, a claim to 828,000 square miles between the Mississippi and the Rockies, and roughly doubled its own extent overnight. The Louisiana Purchase set the pattern for how the interior would take shape: territory acquired as a rectangle of diplomatic ambition, then subdivided by statute rather than by terrain. The Land Ordinance of 1785 had already imposed a township-and-range grid on surveyors' maps, and that grid crawled west with the settlers, which is why the plains states are drawn in straight meridians and parallels and why Kansas has the outline of a sheet of paper. The 49th parallel fixed the northern edge by treaty in 1818 and 1846, and the Mexican cession of 1848 added the southwest in the same spirit — a country assembled from instruments of paper, then surveyed into being.

What bends the page is geology, and only occasionally. The Appalachians, worn low and folded in a mountain-building event older than the Atlantic, nudge a few borders; the Rockies are too high and too young for lines to cross them casually, so several western boundaries climb and fall along their flanks. Rivers do the rest where rivers were available: the Rio Grande carves the long diagonal against Mexico, the Red River wanders through the southern plains, and the Great Lakes bite a notch out of the north. The coasts are the only truly organic edges, shaped by a drowned plain in the east and by a faulted, mountainous margin in the west.

A freehand attempt should reflect that order of authority: box first, then the lakes, Florida and the Texas point, with coasts drawn in a light hand — because the interior really was drawn by hand, on paper, before anyone lived there.

What is "Drawing United States from Memory"?

Drawing United States from memory means sketching United States's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

United States sits in North America and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 4 neighboring country pages on this site. When you hit Reveal, your sketch is scored 0–100 against the real border, so every attempt teaches you something about the outline.

The continental United States is a wide rectangle about twice as long as it is tall, with the Florida peninsula hanging off the southeast corner, the Gulf coast sweeping inward below it, and the Great Lakes notching the northern border with Canada.

How to Draw United States from Memory

Step 01

The contiguous United States is a wide rectangle, roughly twice as wide as it is tall. That 2:1 ratio is the whole secret: draw the box first and place it slightly left of center on the canvas, then adjust the borders so the east and west coasts read as the natural sides of that rectangle.

Step 02

Hanging off the southeast corner, Florida juts down into the Gulf of Mexico like a pointed toe, with the rounded bulge of the Gulf coast curving inward just to its west. The Gulf shoreline from Florida across to Texas sweeps in a shallow, smooth arc that's easy to place once the rectangle and Florida are in.

Step 03

The Great Lakes notch the northern border with Canada in the northeast — a set of clearly separated dents that you can draw as one chunky, irregular bite. The Pacific coast runs nearly straight down the west side, while Maine's small peninsula pokes into the Atlantic in the far northeast to finish the outline.

How United States Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against United States's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Drawing large and roughly centered is the single fastest way to raise your score — a small sketch tucked in a corner overlaps less of the true border, so it scores lower.
