Why Tonga Looks the Way It Does

Tonga is the only Pacific island nation that was never formally colonized, and it is the reason the region still has an indigenous monarchy. A dynasty of sacred chiefs, the Tu'i Tonga, held authority across a wide sphere of the southern Pacific centuries before Europeans arrived, and the modern kingdom consolidated that inheritance through a written constitution in 1875. Britain accepted a protected-state arrangement in 1900 that left government in Tongan hands, and full sovereignty returned in 1970 with remarkably little having changed in between.

The islands sit just west of the Tonga Trench, one of the deepest places in the ocean, where the Pacific plate dives beneath the Australian plate and drives the volcanism and earthquakes that keep the group restless. That is the machinery behind Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, the submarine volcano whose January 2022 eruption pushed a plume into the mesosphere, sent a pressure wave around the planet several times, and cut the country's only submarine internet cable.

About 170 islands make up the group, of which roughly 40 are inhabited, arranged as a north-south spread of clusters rather than one continuous line: a low limestone main island in the south, the scattered islets of Ha'apai in the middle, the deep harbor of Vava'u above them, and the tiny Niuas far to the north. Captain Cook, arriving in 1773, named the principal island the Friendly Islands after the welcome he received, an impression later historians have complicated considerably.

A ladder will get you closer than any outline: a heavy rung at the bottom, small rungs above, and the top one barely there at all.

What is "Drawing Tonga from Memory"?

Drawing Tonga from memory means sketching Tonga's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Tonga sits in Oceania and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 2 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Tonga is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Tonga is a long chain of islands stretching roughly north to south in a series of clusters, Tongatapu in the far south, the Ha'apai and Vava'u groups in the middle, and the small Niuas islands far to the north.

How to Draw Tonga from Memory

Step 01

Draw Tonga as a vertical string of island clusters rather than one connected shape, because the country is a long north-south chain. Place Tongatapu as a solid blob at the bottom, then work upward through the scattered dots of Ha'apai, the larger cluster of Vava'u, and the distant Niuas at the top. The gaps between clusters are part of the shape.

Step 02

Make Tongatapu the boldest island, because it is the largest and holds the capital, Nuku'alofa. Draw it as a broad, slightly flat oval near the bottom of the chain, and give it a low, level look to contrast with the tiny dots of Ha'apai scattered north of it in the middle of the country. Vava'u sits above Ha'apai as a slightly larger cluster.

Step 03

Set the chain with its neighbors: Fiji lies to the northwest and Samoa to the northeast, so Tonga drops almost straight down between them toward the open South Pacific. Keep the line running north-south, with Tongatapu anchoring the southern end and the tiny Niuas pushing the chain far up toward Fiji's latitude. The vertical drop between Fiji and Samoa is the whole identity.

How Tonga Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Tonga's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Tonga is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
