Why Angola Looks the Way It Does

Begin at Cabinda, the piece of Angola that is not attached to Angola: a compact territory on the Atlantic with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on both its inland sides and no dry route home to the main body of Angola. The strip of Congolese coast that separates the two is roughly sixty kilometers wide, narrow enough that many maps quietly draw the exclave as if it were still joined. It is not, and has not been since 1885.

The detachment is a product of the conference table. Portuguese agents signed agreements with Cabindan chiefs in early 1885, treating the enclave as a holding distinct from Angola proper, while the Berlin Conference that same season awarded the mouth and lower course of the Congo River to Leopold's Congo Free State. The river's mouth thus passed to the Free State, leaving Cabinda stranded north of it. That river, not any whim on land, draws Angola's northern edge: the main body's frontier runs along the lower Congo before a foreign sliver of coastline resumes.

The south is a story of empires abutting. German South-West Africa pressed against Portuguese Angola from the 1880s, and the boundary that resulted tracks the Cunene and the Okavango for much of its length, producing the country's narrowing southern tail. Between the rivers lies miombo woodland and the old Kingdom of Kongo's trading hinterland, none of which the lines were drawn to describe.

Draw the two pieces separately and refuse to let your hand bridge the gap: the main block with its tapering southern tail, and Cabinda holding the coast further north. That gap is the whole story of the outline.

What is "Drawing Angola from Memory"?

Drawing Angola from memory means sketching Angola's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Angola sits in Africa and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Angola is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Angola is a broad, roughly square block on the Atlantic coast of southern Africa, tapering to a narrow tail in the south, with the tiny exclave of Cabinda sitting disconnected on the coast to the north.

How to Draw Angola from Memory

Step 01

Sketch a chunky rectangle sitting on the Atlantic, its western side a long, fairly straight coastline facing the ocean. Angola reads as a block of land dropped onto the south-western curve of Africa, so start with that solid rectangle and keep the western shore simple, the real border lines all cut through the inland edges instead, so keep it simple and blocky.

Step 02

Give the block its signature detail: the southern border tapers into a narrow tail that reaches down toward Namibia, while the detached exclave of Cabinda floats on the coast far to the north, separated by a thin sliver of Congo's coastline. Draw those two pieces and Angola's odd, double shape becomes instantly recognizable on any map.

Step 03

Anchor the whole outline with real borders: Zambia and the Congo press in along the east, and the long southern edge runs against Namibia at the bottom. Once the main rectangle, the southern tail, and the floating Cabinda splinter are all placed, the western Atlantic coast closes the shape into a complete, recognizable whole.

How Angola Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Angola's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Angola is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
