Why Cabo Verde Looks the Way It Does
Ten islands, and not one of them touches another. Cabo Verde's nearest neighbor is the Atlantic itself; the coast of Senegal lies roughly five hundred and seventy kilometers east, far enough that the archipelago appears on Atlantic charts rather than on maps of Africa's edge. There is no border problem here at all, only a scatter problem.
The scatter is volcanic, the work of a hotspot punching through the ocean floor, and the islands were uninhabited when Portuguese sailors reached them in the 1450s. Fogo still erupts, and its cone rises more than two and a half kilometers from the sea. Settlement began as a Portuguese trading post and slave depot, which is why the population is Creole and Portuguese is only one of its inheritances.
Position made the specks matter. They sit on the old sailing routes between Europe and the South Atlantic, so they became a coaling station and a cable landing — the transatlantic telegraph came ashore at São Vicente — and a regular stopover for ships bound for Brazil and the Cape. Darwin collected on Santiago in 1832, on the first leg of the Beagle's voyage, and found the islands useful precisely because every long passage in that ocean touched them. The old capital on that same island, laid out in the sixteenth century, counts among the earliest European towns anywhere in the tropics.
Place dots rather than an outline and the country appears: two loose clusters, the windward group in the north and the leeward group in the south, arranged in a curve that reads as one sweep if you join them by eye.

What is "Drawing Cabo Verde from Memory"?
Drawing Cabo Verde from memory means sketching Cabo Verde's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Border comparison scoring for Cabo Verde is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.
Cabo Verde is an Atlantic archipelago of ten volcanic islands off the coast of Senegal, arranged in a loose crescent with the northern Barlavento group curving down to the southern Sotavento group.
How to Draw Cabo Verde from Memory
Step 01
Draw the chain as a crescent sweeping through the Atlantic, not a single landmass: start with the northern Barlavento group, Santo Antão, São Vicente, and the flat island of Sal, then curve the dots down toward the southern group. The whole archipelago arcs from northeast to southwest, facing the coast of Senegal, two loose clusters joined by open water.
Step 02
Make Santiago the anchor: it is the largest island and holds the capital, Praia, sitting near the southern end of the chain. Draw it as a sturdy rounded block, then place Fogo, with its volcano, to its west and the smaller islets strung between, so the southern Sotavento group carries real weight; the northern islands are smaller and more scattered.
Step 03
Anchor the whole layout in the ocean: the archipelago lies about six hundred kilometers off Senegal, far from any mainland coast, so keep generous empty water around it. The two island clusters form a crescent that reads as one curved sweep rather than random dots when you link them by eye; that curve is the country's identity on any map.

How Cabo Verde Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Cabo Verde's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Cabo Verde is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
