Why Comoros Looks the Way It Does

Midway along the Mozambique Channel, in the stretch of water that carried monsoon dhows between Africa, Arabia and India for a thousand years, four volcanic islands make up the Comoros. Madagascar lies east across the channel and Mozambique west, and the islands sit closer to the African shore than to the great island, strung diagonally from northwest to southeast across a couple of hundred kilometers.

Politically the archipelago is a split one. France took the islands piecemeal through the nineteenth century and organized them as a single colony; when decolonization came in 1974 and 1975, three islands voted for independence and Mayotte, the southeasternmost, voted to stay French. The Union of the Comoros has claimed Mayotte ever since and the United Nations has repeatedly backed the claim, but the island became a full French department in 2011 and its people keep voting in referendums to remain. The national flag still carries four stripes for four islands that two governments administer.

Geologically the islands are young and restless. Karthala, the shield volcano crowning Grande Comore, holds one of the world's largest active calderas and has buried farmland on its own island more than once. Settlers arrived in layers — Bantu-speaking Africans, traders from the Persian Gulf and Shiraz, Malagasy, then the French — which is why the islands' culture is a blend found nowhere else in quite those proportions.

Three beads on a short string, spaced from memory rather than measured, is the honest rendering: one large island at the northwest end, two smaller ones trailing southeast, and Mayotte sitting at the end of the line under another flag.

What is "Drawing Comoros from Memory"?

Drawing Comoros from memory means sketching Comoros's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Comoros sits in Africa and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Comoros is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

The Comoros are a small archipelago of volcanic islands in the Mozambique Channel, roughly midway between Madagascar and Mozambique, with the three main islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli, arranged in a diagonal chain from northwest to southeast.

How to Draw Comoros from Memory

Step 01

Draw the Comoros as a diagonal chain of dots rather than one solid mass: three main islands running from the northwest down to the southeast through the Mozambique Channel. Space them like beads on a string, with the largest island at the northwest end and the smallest trailing toward the southeast; the whole chain spans only about two hundred kilometers.

Step 02

Make Grande Comore the anchor: it is the largest island and holds the capital, Moroni, with a great volcano rising in its center. Draw it as the boldest, roundest island of the three, then add Anjouan as a smaller, bumpier mass to its southeast and Mohéli as the smallest dot below; keeping a clear size order makes the chain readable.

Step 03

Set the whole chain in the ocean between two real coastlines: Madagascar lies far to the east, and the coast of Mozambique lies to the west across the channel. Keeping the Comoros centered in that gap, closer to Mozambique than to Madagascar, locks the archipelago's position on the map; they are tiny, so leave lots of open water around them.

How Comoros Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Comoros's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Comoros is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
