Why Bulgaria Looks the Way It Does
The mountain range that gave a whole peninsula its name runs through the middle of this country. The Balkan range — Stara Planina in Bulgarian — rises as a long, narrow wall from the Serbian border to the Black Sea, and Ottoman geographers borrowed the word for everything south of the Danube. To the north the country's edge is water of a different order: the Danube draws the entire northern border, and Bulgaria is the only Balkan state whose whole northern face is one river.
South of the range the Rhodopes pile up toward Greece, a mass of crystalline upland cut by the Maritsa on its way to the Aegean, and Sofia sits in a high basin at the foot of Vitosha. That layering — river, range, mountain mass, sea — is why the whole reads as a block. Its actual boundaries were fought over far more recently than the terrain suggests. San Stefano in 1878 granted a large Bulgarian state reaching toward the Aegean; Berlin the same summer cut it back, and the Balkan Wars and the First World War removed the rest of the outlets.
What survived is the flat-topped block on the map: the Danube above, the Black Sea to the right, Greece and Turkey along the southern rim, Serbia and North Macedonia pinning the west. So the outline worth practicing is a squat square resting on a river you can draw first and a sea you can draw last, with one shallow cut in the southeast where the Turkish border begins. The range in the middle never touches a border; it simply explains why the north and the south of the country have so often behaved like different countries.

What is "Drawing Bulgaria from Memory"?
Drawing Bulgaria from memory means sketching Bulgaria's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.
Bulgaria sits in Europe and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 5 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Bulgaria is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.
Bulgaria is a compact, roughly square block of land in the eastern Balkans, with Romania along its northern border and a short Black Sea coast forming the eastern side.
How to Draw Bulgaria from Memory
Step 01
Bulgaria is a squarish block, so start with a rectangle that is nearly as tall as it is wide — avoid stretching it too far east or west. The western edge runs roughly straight between Serbia and North Macedonia, and the eastern side opens onto the Black Sea with a coast only about as long as the top or bottom.
Step 02
Give the block its character with the mountains: the Balkan range crosses the middle and the Rhodopes fill the south, but for the outline the key is the blunt northeast corner. Sketch a clean square, then cut the southeast corner on a shallow angle where Turkey's border starts, so the shape is not a perfect box. That angled cut gives the block life.
Step 03
Lock it with the neighbors: Romania draws the long northern line along the Danube, Greece and Turkey define the entire southern rim, and Serbia and North Macedonia pin the west. Fit the square between the Danube on top and the Aegean neighbors below and Bulgaria's position is fixed. The Danube line and the southern rim together settle every corner.
A squat square on the Black Sea: Romania caps the north, Greece and Turkey hug the southern rim, and the whole block tips gently toward the sea.
How Bulgaria Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Bulgaria's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Bulgaria is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
