Why Spain Looks the Way It Does

Most of Spain is a plateau, and the plateau explains the rest. The Meseta Central fills the interior of Iberia at six to eight hundred meters above the sea, ringed by ranges that cut it off from the coast and from Atlantic rain, so the Spanish interior is dry, cold in winter and poorly drained; Madrid sits on it at higher altitude than any other European capital, and its rivers, the Tagus and the Ebro among them, escape outward to seas that Spain barely faces. Everything the peninsula is known for — the ports, the irrigated valleys, the dense coastal economies — happens at the edges of that raised block.

History followed the same pattern. In 711 an Umayyad army crossed from Morocco and overran the Visigothic kingdom within a few years, and the Christian response began in the mountain refuges of the north, in Asturias and Navarre. The Reconquista then pushed south for seven hundred years, along the plateau's flanks and down its river valleys, until Granada surrendered in 1492 and the map of Iberia filled in with the kingdoms whose shapes are still legible in Spain's regions — and in Portugal's separate existence.

The Pyrenees close the northern border with a wall of rock that no state has ever found easy to cross, and the Meseta's western edge is where Portugal was carved out as an Atlantic-facing kingdom. Drawn later without reference, the great square holds its shape: it is the interior plateau that keeps the outline so stubbornly simple, with coasts and mountains doing the detail work around it.

What is "Drawing Spain from Memory"?

Drawing Spain from memory means sketching Spain's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Spain sits in Europe and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 4 neighboring country pages on this site. When you hit Reveal, your sketch is scored 0–100 against the real border, so every attempt teaches you something about the outline.

Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula as a large, roughly square block of land, with the Pyrenees forming a mountain wall along the French border and Portugal carved from its western edge.

How to Draw Spain from Memory

Step 01

Spain is a big, square-ish block that fills most of Iberia, so start with a broad square or rectangle that is slightly wider than it is tall. The north coast runs along the Bay of Biscay and the south coast along the Mediterranean, tilting gently as it narrows toward the southwest. Let the tilt carry the whole block toward the southwest.

Step 02

Carve out the western edge: Portugal is cut from Spain's western side as a long vertical slice, so the Spanish outline has a broad notch running down its west. The Pyrenees then form the rugged northern cap along France, and the southern coast drops to the Mediterranean with Gibraltar at its southern tip. The notch and the cap frame the block on two sides.

Step 03

Anchor it with its neighbors: France sits across the Pyrenees on the north, Portugal fills the western notch, Andorra is tucked into the Pyrenees on the French border, and Morocco lies across the narrow Strait of Gibraltar to the south. That frame of fixed neighbors locks Spain's large block in place without fail. That fixed ring of neighbors locks the square in.

A big square block in a crown of mountains: Spain fills most of Iberia with the Pyrenees across its top and Portugal carved from its western side.

How Spain Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Spain's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Drawing large and roughly centered is the single fastest way to raise your score — a small sketch tucked in a corner overlaps less of the true border, so it scores lower.
