Why Cambodia Looks the Way It Does
Each monsoon the Tonlé Sap river stops flowing and runs backwards. When the Mekong swells, pressure at the confluence at Phnom Penh pushes water up the Tonlé Sap and into the lake of the same name, which can grow from roughly 2,500 square kilometers in the dry season to several times that, drowning forest and rice land in the middle of the country. That single reversal makes central Cambodia one of the most productive inland fisheries in the world, and it has ordered settlement there for as long as people have lived on the lake's edge.
The flood built an empire. Angkor, the Khmer capital from the ninth century onward, was the largest pre-industrial city in the world, fed by a grid of reservoirs and canals that stored the lake's surplus and allowed several rice harvests a year; the temple mountains of Angkor Wat and its neighbors are what survives of that hydraulic engineering. When the system silted and Siamese armies pressed in from the west, the court abandoned the site and moved downriver to Phnom Penh, closer to the trade the Mekong carried.
The modern border is a French inheritance. Cambodia entered the protectorate in 1863, and its edges were fixed as part of the Indochina map: Siam gave up Battambang and Siem Reap only in 1907, while the eastern line ran through territory the Vietnamese had been settling for centuries. Draw it from memory and the shape is generous around the lake and pinched at the short Gulf of Thailand coast, the outline of a state organized around water rather than walls.

What is "Drawing Cambodia from Memory"?
Drawing Cambodia from memory means sketching Cambodia's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.
Cambodia sits in Asia and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Cambodia is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.
Cambodia is a roughly boxy country in the heart of Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand on the west, Laos to the north, and Vietnam along the east, with a short southern coast opening onto the Gulf of Thailand.
How to Draw Cambodia from Memory
Step 01
Begin with the Gulf of Thailand, because Cambodia's only coast is a short southwestern strip that tucks in between Thailand and Vietnam. From that narrow sea edge the country widens inland into a broad, rounded block, so sketch it as a box that expands steadily toward the northeast, keeping the sea frontage short and tucked away.
Step 02
The heart of the shape is Tonle Sap, the great lake at the center of the country, with the Mekong River flowing down the eastern side. Sketch the lake as a bulging oval set low in the middle, then let the border swell outward around it to give the interior room, especially toward the north and northeast where the border bulges the most.
Step 03
Let Vietnam pin the east, where the border runs in a long, lumpy diagonal that bends inward in the south near the Mekong Delta. Match that curve, keep Thailand's straighter line on the west, and Cambodia's rounded, kidney-shaped block locks into place between its two bigger neighbors, reading clearly at any size.
A boxy, rounded land of rivers and lake, wrapped by Thailand on the west, Laos above, and Vietnam along the east, its coast dipping to the Gulf of Thailand.
How Cambodia Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Cambodia's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Cambodia is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
