Why India Looks the Way It Does

Five weeks was all Sir Cyril Radcliffe had, and he had never set foot in India before arriving. A London barrister with no local knowledge — chosen partly because of it — he reached Delhi in July 1947 to divide British India and published his award two days after independence, slicing Punjab in the west and Bengal in the east through villages whose fields had been worked by the same families for centuries. Roughly fifteen million people crossed the line in both directions, and hundreds of thousands died. Few borders anywhere were drawn faster or cost more.

Above and below that colonial stroke, the subcontinent's outline is geology. India is a raft of the ancient southern continent Gondwana that drifted north and collided with Asia about fifty million years ago; the collision continues, the Himalaya still rises a few millimeters a year, and the resulting wall closes off the entire northern edge of the map. From the wall the peninsula tapers south between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, with the two great river mouths at its shoulders now belonging to Pakistan and Bangladesh.

A memory sketch nearly draws itself: lay the Himalayan ridge straight across the top, hang the west coast and the east coast from its ends, and let them converge toward the southern point. Radcliffe's line is the break in that elegance, an arbitrary ruler-and-deadline stroke across two densely settled plains, and it is the one part of the outline no landscape would ever have predicted.

What is "Drawing India from Memory"?

Drawing India from memory means sketching India's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

India sits in Asia and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 7 neighboring country pages on this site. When you hit Reveal, your sketch is scored 0–100 against the real border, so every attempt teaches you something about the outline.

India tapers like a kite — a wide, mountainous top across the north and a long triangle of peninsula land narrowing south into the Indian Ocean, with the island of Sri Lanka floating just beyond the point.

How to Draw India from Memory

Step 01

India is the big triangle of South Asia: a broad, squared-off top along the northern mountains and a long peninsula that tapers steadily to a sharp southern point. Draw the wide northern base first, then let both coastlines — the Arabian Sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the east — narrow the land southward.

Step 02

The northern edge of the triangle is the Himalayan wall, shared with China, Nepal, and Bhutan — draw it as a fairly straight, slightly bumpy ridge running east-west. Because the mountains are so dominant, they anchor the whole shape: once the top edge is placed, the two coasts naturally fall into position beneath it.

Step 03

The Deccan peninsula is the part of India that actually juts into the Indian Ocean, ending in a soft point at the southern tip. Sri Lanka hangs just off that tip like a teardrop — draw it separate, not attached — and use it as the visual anchor that tells you the country's southward taper is finished.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

A kite tilted south: Himalayan spine on top, a triangle of land tapering into the ocean, with Sri Lanka as the teardrop just off the point.

How India Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against India's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Drawing large and roughly centered is the single fastest way to raise your score — a small sketch tucked in a corner overlaps less of the true border, so it scores lower.
