Why Moldova Looks the Way It Does
East of the Dniester river a sliver of Moldova has governed itself since 1992, calling itself Transnistria, printing its own currency, keeping Soviet-era statues and a Russian-speaking establishment while the rest of the country moved toward Romania and the European Union. A brief war in the summer of 1992 froze the split, and Russian troops have stayed in the breakaway strip ever since. In the south the Turkic-speaking Gagauz won their own autonomy in 1994. Both enclaves are reasons the border looks patched rather than settled.
The rest of the outline is older than either dispute. Moldova is the core of historical Bessarabia, a plateau of orchards and vineyards between the Prut and the Dniester: annexed by Russia in 1812, united with Romania in 1918, seized by the Soviet Union in 1940 under the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and retaken in 1944. The Prut, running the whole length of the western edge, is the line between the Romanian and Soviet worlds; the Dniester marks the other. When the USSR dissolved, internal republican lines became international borders, and the industrial, Russified strip east of the Dniester — never comfortable inside a Romanian-speaking state — refused to come along.
Between the two rivers the land is gentle, rolling wine country, with some of the largest cellars on Earth cut into its limestone. On a blank page, fix the waist first: the outline bulges in the north, pinches in the middle and flares again toward the Ukrainian south, an organic silhouette drawn across open ground with no mountain or sea to straighten it.

Drawing Moldova from memory means sketching Moldova's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Moldova is a landlocked, roughly rounded country that narrows in its middle like a bunch of grapes, with Romania along its western border and Ukraine surrounding the rest.
How to Draw Moldova from Memory
Step 01
Moldova is a compact, landlocked country, so begin with a rounded shape that is broader in the north and tapers toward a narrower middle. The eastern border with Ukraine runs fairly straight, while the western border with Romania follows the line of the Prut River across its entire length. Let the narrow waist mark the country's middle.
Step 02
Give it the grape-cluster look: the outline is not a clean oval but a series of soft bulges, especially in the north, and it pinches noticeably at the middle before flaring again toward the south. Sketch those gentle lobes and a subtle waist to capture Moldova's distinctive, organic silhouette on the open plain. The bulges make it look like a cluster rather than a square.
Step 03
Lock it with its two neighbors: Romania fills the entire western border, and Ukraine wraps around the north, east, and south in a broad arc. Because Moldova is small and has no coast, fitting its lumpy oval snugly inside that Ukraine-shaped frame fixes the whole outline without any drift at all. The Ukraine-shaped frame holds the whole outline together.

How Moldova Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Moldova's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Moldova is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
