Why Seychelles Looks the Way It Does

Granite has no business in the middle of an ocean, which is the anomaly Seychelles is built on. Almost every other mid-ocean island on Earth is volcanic or built of coral; the inner Seychelles are blocks of grey Precambrian rock, roughly 650 million years old, splintered from Gondwana when India and Madagascar tore away and left a fragment of continental crust stranded on the African plate.

Of some 115 islands only about forty carry that granite, clustered on a shallow bank around Mahé, Praslin and La Digue; the rest are coral, strung far to the southwest as far as Aldabra, whose giant tortoises survived because the atoll was too remote to raid. Mahé is only about twenty-five kilometers long yet rises more than 900 meters, so little of it is flat, and the whole inner group shares one submerged plateau rather than separate volcanic roots. The country is Africa's smallest, and the granite core holds nearly all of its people.

The islands were uninhabited until French settlers arrived in the 1770s, so the outline carries no ancient frontiers, only the geometry of a drowned continental shelf and the sea levels of the last ice age; an economy of copra and cinnamon came first, tourism and tuna later. The granites' steepness is part of that inheritance, the ridges of an old river-cut landscape now falling straight into deep water. Drawing it from memory is a scattering problem rather than a coastline one: place the three main rocks close together in the northeast, then let the coral specks trail away toward the horizon, and the picture is right.

What is "Drawing Seychelles from Memory"?

Drawing Seychelles from memory means sketching Seychelles's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Seychelles sits in Africa and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Seychelles is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Seychelles is an archipelago of over a hundred islands in the western Indian Ocean, north of Madagascar. The granite islands of Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue form the main cluster, while low coral atolls string far to the southwest.

How to Draw Seychelles from Memory

Step 01

Sketch Seychelles not as one landmass but as a loose scatter of dots across the western Indian Ocean, far to the northeast of Madagascar. The country spans hundreds of miles, so spread your islands out; the cluster of granite islands at the northeast is the densest, most important part, and the capital sits there, so give it extra presence.

Step 02

Draw the heart of the country as three close islands: Mahé, the largest, in the middle, with Praslin and La Digue tucked nearby to the northeast. These granite islands are steep and irregular, so sketch them as lumpy shapes rather than smooth circles, and remember they are among the only granite islands on Earth that belong to no continent.

Step 03

Position the archipelago with its far neighbors: Madagascar sits southwest across open water, with Mauritius and the Comoros also scattered in the same ocean. The country's identity is a wide scatter of small islands, so keep the overall picture one of isolated specks rather than a single continuous coastline, with every island tiny and the gaps between them large.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

A hundred islands scattered across the Indian Ocean like flung confetti, the main cluster of Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue huddled together while coral atolls trail far to the southwest.

How Seychelles Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Seychelles's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Seychelles is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
