Why Estonia Looks the Way It Does

Islands come first with Estonia: more than two thousand of them lie off a coast that is itself a maze of bays and peninsulas, with Saaremaa the largest and Hiiumaa just to its north, both low limestone platforms fringed by reeds and juniper. The mainland's northern face is the Baltic klint, a limestone escarpment running west to east along the Gulf of Finland, cut by waterfalls where rivers step off it.

The eastern border is a lake. Lake Peipus, shared with Russia, is one of Europe's largest, and for a long stretch it is the boundary itself, which is why the border bulges and softens there rather than running straight. Farther south the line hardens into the ordinary kind: a Soviet-era internal boundary, agreed when Estonia was a union republic and inherited unchanged when independence was restored in 1991 after five decades of Soviet rule. Estonia still regards the 1920 Treaty of Tartu line, which lay farther east, as the legal frontier — a grievance rather than an active dispute, but one that kept the two countries from ratifying a border treaty until 2018.

The land itself is still rising out of the sea, post-glacial rebound lifting the coast by a few millimeters a year, so the outline is slowly redrawing itself. A useful habit while drawing it is to place Saaremaa and Hiiumaa before the mainland, because those two blocks offshore are the shape's signature, and the rounded mainland with its flat northern edge falls into place between the gulf above and Latvia below.

At Narva, on the northern reach of that eastern line, two medieval fortresses face each other across the river — Estonia's Hermann and Russia's Ivangorod — a fitting emblem for a frontier that is now the eastern edge of the European Union and the Schengen area, where the water runs slow beneath a bridge that separates two currencies and two calendars.

What is "Drawing Estonia from Memory"?

Drawing Estonia from memory means sketching Estonia's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Estonia sits in Europe and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 4 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Estonia is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Estonia is a compact, rounded mainland that bulges eastward toward Russia, with the Gulf of Finland along its northern coast and the large islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa sitting offshore to the west.

How to Draw Estonia from Memory

Step 01

Estonia is the northernmost Baltic state, so draw a compact, rounded mainland with its flat northern edge resting on the Gulf of Finland. The southern border with Latvia runs roughly straight, while the eastern side bulges toward Russia where Lake Peipus forms part of the boundary and gives the outline a soft, watery edge. Let the flat north edge rest squarely on the water.

Step 02

Add the western islands, the country's signature feature: Saaremaa is the large island off the west coast, with Hiiumaa just to its north, and a scatter of smaller islets between them and the mainland. Sketch Saaremaa and Hiiumaa as two chunky blocks so close to the coast they seem almost attached to the shore. Their placement completes the western side of the country.

Step 03

Lock the outline with its neighbors and water: the Gulf of Finland separates Estonia from Finland to the north, Russia fills the entire eastern border, Latvia runs along the south, and the Baltic opens to the west. That ring of fixed edges gives Estonia's rounded mass its exact place and prevents the shape from drifting on the map.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

A plump wedge between the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic: Estonia bulges toward Russia in the east, while Saaremaa and Hiiumaa hover off its western shore.

How Estonia Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Estonia's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Estonia is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
