Why Malawi Looks the Way It Does

Lake Malawi runs about 560 kilometers up a Rift Valley trough, and its water set the eastern edge long before any surveyor arrived. The lake drops some 700 meters to its floor, which places it among the deepest in the world, and the British protectorate that became Nyasaland was essentially its western shore with a hinterland attached; Livingstone reached the water in 1859 and his accounts drove the missions and steamers that followed. Nyasa simply means lake, so the old name was a tautology the maps kept anyway, and hundreds of cichlid species found nowhere else make the water as valuable as the land around it. The trough is still widening as the Rift pulls apart, and the lake's level has swung by meters within living memory, redrawing the shoreline where villages stood.

Water also drew the argument. The 1890 Anglo-German treaty gave Britain the whole lake up to the eastern shore, which is why Malawi claims all of it today and Tanzania argues instead for a median line; at the southern end Mozambique takes a share, so the eastern border alternates between open water and a colonial straight cut. The Shire, the lake's only outlet, carries the outflow south to the Zambezi, and the country narrows around it — in most places barely 100 to 160 kilometers wide.

If the lake is right, the country draws itself beside it: a long, tilted strip with a rounded southern lobe, never fat, always hugging the water's edge, with one river running off to the south.

What is "Drawing Malawi from Memory"?

Drawing Malawi from memory means sketching Malawi's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Malawi sits in Africa and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Malawi is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Malawi is one of Africa's narrowest countries, a long sliver that hugs the western shore of Lake Malawi. It stretches north to south between Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique, the lake filling most of its eastern border.

How to Draw Malawi from Memory

Step 01

Begin with a long, narrow band of land that runs almost directly north to south, far taller than it is wide. Malawi is one of the most slender countries in Africa, so resist the urge to fatten it; the whole shape is basically a tilted stripe with a rounded southern lobe, defined by its lake as one long land-and-water corridor.

Step 02

Draw Lake Malawi down the eastern side, a long body of water that occupies most of the border with Mozambique and Tanzania. The lake is the country's defining feature, so let it dominate the profile; Malawi reads as the thin land to its west, not as a standalone blob, so trace the lake's long, slightly curved outline running the full height of the country.

Step 03

Lock the outline with the countries around it: Tanzania caps the northern end, Zambia presses the western flank, and Mozambique wraps the eastern and southern sides below the lake. Keep Malawi's width modest and its length generous, and let the strip narrow where the lake pinches it, so this slender band stays unmistakable and everyone recognizes the country by its sheer slenderness.

How Malawi Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Malawi's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Malawi is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
