Why Portugal Looks the Way It Does

The Treaty of Zamora, signed in 1143, had the king of Leon accept Afonso Henriques as king in his own right, and the frontier demarcated at Alcanices in 1297 has barely moved since: Portugal's border with Spain is the oldest fixed boundary in Europe, older than most of the states around it. The country faces west and south onto roughly 800 km of Atlantic, with Spain supplying the whole of the landward side.

The border stayed still because the Reconquista finished here first. Portugal's counties, planted in the northwest between the Minho and the Douro, pushed south down the Atlantic flank of Iberia and reached the Algarve in 1249, completing their share of the peninsula while Castile was still advancing. That gave the kingdom a finished ocean face and nothing left to take inland, so the energy went to sea: Henry the Navigator's expeditions and then da Gama's route to India made the western edge the country's whole reason for existing.

The rivers keep the internal geography in order as they run west into the ocean — the Minho on the northern border, the Douro through its gorge and vineyards, where port wine has been regulated since 1756 in the world's oldest demarcated wine region, the Tagus widening at Lisbon, the Guadiana marking the southeast. The land is a shield of old rock tilting toward the Atlantic, higher in the north, softening into the plains of the Alentejo, and the ocean moderates everything the interior of Iberia suffers. Sketching Iberia later, draw the rectangle first and give the ocean the rest: a long Atlantic face, a blunt southern corner at the Algarve, and one neighbor doing all the land borders.

What is "Drawing Portugal from Memory"?

Drawing Portugal from memory means sketching Portugal's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Portugal sits in Europe and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 1 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Portugal is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Portugal is a long, roughly rectangular country on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula, with a broad Atlantic coastline along its west and south and Spain forming its entire eastern border.

How to Draw Portugal from Memory

Step 01

Portugal is a rectangle running north-south, so establish the vertical scale first: it stretches from the cooler north near Galicia down to the warm Algarve in the south. Draw a broad, slightly tapering rectangle whose western edge is the Atlantic and whose eastern side is entirely Spain along a long shared border. Let the vertical stretch dominate the whole drawing.

Step 02

Give the Atlantic coast its texture: the western shoreline is a fairly smooth, gently curving line, but it is interrupted by the broad estuary of the Tagus river, where Lisbon sits. Near the bottom, the coast turns sharply east to form the Algarve's southern shore, so the rectangle ends in a blunt, rounded corner facing the sea. That blunt corner meets the sea.

Step 03

Anchor it with Spain and the Atlantic: the entire eastern border follows Spain for hundreds of kilometers, while the sea opens wide on the west and south. Remember Portugal also holds the Azores and Madeira far out in the Atlantic, but the mainland rectangle is the shape that matters, locked between Spain and the sea.

MEMORY MNEMONIC

A rectangular slice of Iberia facing the Atlantic: Portugal runs north-south as a broad rectangle, its back pressed against Spain and its entire western edge open to the sea.

How Portugal Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Portugal's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Portugal is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
