Why Singapore Looks the Way It Does

Reclamation has done more to draw Singapore's outline than any treaty or river. At independence in 1965 the island covered about 580 square kilometers; the figure today is roughly 730, which means close to a quarter of the national territory did not exist when the country was founded. Airport runways, the petrochemical complex assembled from several islands into Jurong Island, and much of the western port district all sit on ground that was seabed within living memory. Few states can say their border is a construction project. The island itself is geologically undramatic, a low platform of old sedimentary rock whose highest point barely reaches 160 meters, which is part of why so much shoreline could be rebuilt without arguing with the terrain.

The site Stamford Raffles chose in 1819 was a matter of one thing only: position. The island guards the southern entrance to the Strait of Malacca, the channel through which as much as a third of the world's shipping passes on its way between the Indian Ocean and East Asia, and near Singapore that passage narrows to little more than a mile of navigable water. Being at the choke point, rather than possessing soil or resources, made the port and later the state. The mainland is close enough to matter enormously and far enough to be another country; a causeway has spanned the Johor Strait since 1924.

The pencil version of Singapore is a slightly rounded blob, and that is not a bad answer, because the island has few natural angles worth memorizing. What has to be got right is its place at the very tip of the Malay Peninsula, with the Riau islands scattered across the water to the south.

What is "Drawing Singapore from Memory"?

Drawing Singapore from memory means sketching Singapore's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Singapore sits in Asia and is rated ★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — one of the gentlest starter shapes on the site. It connects to 2 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Singapore is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Singapore is a tiny island just off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, a rough diamond shape connected to Malaysia by a short causeway, with Indonesia's Riau Islands scattered across the sea to its south.

How to Draw Singapore from Memory

Step 01

Draw Singapore as a small, rounded diamond sitting at the very bottom of the Malay Peninsula. Keep it tiny, because it is a city-state, and leave a thin causeway connecting its northern point to Malaysia, with open sea on the other three sides of the diamond so the island clearly floats at the peninsula's tip.

Step 02

The dominant detail is the causeway, because the Johor Strait cuts between Singapore and Malaysia, bridged by a narrow land link that makes the island look tethered. Sketch the diamond's flatter northern edge against the strait, and keep the southern coast notched with harbors and inlets that crowd the shoreline with port activity while the rest of the diamond stays clean.

Step 03

Anchor the island with Indonesia, because the Riau Islands lie just south across the Singapore Strait, and the largest, Batam, sits a short ferry ride away. Keep those islands as a dotted line below, Malaysia above, and Singapore's small diamond locks between its two neighbors, holding the scale of the whole drawing on the page.

How Singapore Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Singapore's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Singapore is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
