Why Slovakia Looks the Way It Does
On 1 January 1993 Czechoslovakia divided itself by negotiation into two states, and Slovakia acquired its first separate modern map. There was no war and almost no boundary dispute, largely because the line between the two halves had been an internal administrative border for decades. It remains the only peaceful split of a European state in the twentieth century, which is why its outline carries none of the scars its neighbors do.
The geography was already legible. The High Tatras stand on the Polish border and hold the country's highest ground, Gerlachovsky Peak at about 2,655 m, while the Carpathian arc curves around the north and east. The Danube draws the southern border with Hungary, a river line inherited from the centuries when Slovakia was upper Hungary under the Hungarian crown — Hungarian kings were crowned in Bratislava's cathedral for nearly three hundred years — a settlement fixed at Trianon in 1920 along roughly ethnographic lines. In the west the shape tapers to Bratislava on the Danube, a capital close enough to Vienna to walk across the frontier.
Committed to paper, the shape is a horizontal oval with a rumpled top edge: mountains above, a long smooth river line below, Austria and the Czech Republic pinching the west and Ukraine opening the east. The south side is lowland — the Danubian plain, wheat and goose country — and the population sits almost entirely along it, with the ore-bearing uplands of the center left to forests. Everything else about the outline follows from the two facts that made it — a mountain arc on one side, and a river drawn by empires on the other.

What is "Drawing Slovakia from Memory"?
Drawing Slovakia from memory means sketching Slovakia's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.
Slovakia sits in Europe and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 5 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Slovakia is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.
Slovakia is a compact, landlocked country roughly shaped like a horizontal oval or tilted rhombus, stretched east-west between the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, and Austria.
How to Draw Slovakia from Memory
Step 01
Slovakia runs east-west, so draw a horizontal oval that is clearly wider than it is tall. The country sits in the northern Carpathian arc, and its longest, smoothest edge is the southern border with Hungary, which forms a gentle curve across the bottom and anchors the whole shape. Let the long southern curve anchor the whole oval.
Step 02
Give the oval its mountainous northern character: the High Tatras, the Carpathians' highest range, hump up along the northern border with Poland. Sketch the top edge as a slightly lumpy line, then let the western end taper where it meets Austria and the eastern end round out toward Ukraine across the plain. The mountain bumps above give the top its shape.
Step 03
Fix it with its five neighbors: the Czech Republic sits on the west, Poland caps the north, Ukraine fills the east, Hungary anchors the long southern side, and Austria tucks into the southwest. That frame of five holds Slovakia's tilted oval firmly in place with no room for error. That frame of five leaves no room for the oval to slip.

How Slovakia Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Slovakia's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Slovakia is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
