Why Tajikistan Looks the Way It Does

Ninety-three percent of Tajikistan is mountain, and most of the remaining seven percent is valley floor. The republic occupies the Pamir knot, the point where the Himalaya, Karakoram, Kunlun and Tien Shan ranges converge and bunch together, so the landscape folds instead of sloping. Glaciers cap it: the Fedchenko, at some seventy kilometers, is the longest glacier outside the polar regions, and in 1911 an earthquake dropped an entire mountainside across a valley, damming a river and creating Lake Sarez behind one of the tallest natural dams on Earth. The highest summit, Ismoil Somoni Peak, reaches about 7,500 meters, and the great eastern region of Gorno-Badakhshan covers nearly half the republic while holding only a small fraction of its people.

The irony of the place is hydrological. Those peaks are Central Asia's water tower: glacier run-off forms the headwaters of the Amu Darya and feeds the canals that water Uzbek cotton and downstream fields across the region. Tajikistan itself, with almost no oil or gas, has spent decades unable to convert that water wealth into reliable electricity; Soviet-era dams and the long-contested Rogun project exist to turn winter blackouts into power, while downstream farmers want the water held back for summer irrigation. One river serves two contradictory schedules.

The Soviet Union drew the republic in the 1920s and left it a detached northern lobe around Khujand, cut off from the rest by a strip of Uzbek territory. Treating that outline from memory works best if you make the eastern half heavier than the western, which is literally true of the terrain.

What is "Drawing Tajikistan from Memory"?

Drawing Tajikistan from memory means sketching Tajikistan's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Tajikistan sits in Asia and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 4 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Tajikistan is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Tajikistan is a landlocked, mountainous country in Central Asia, a rough quadrilateral dominated by the Pamir mountains in the east, bordered by Kyrgyzstan, China, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.

How to Draw Tajikistan from Memory

Step 01

Sketch Tajikistan as a landlocked quadrilateral crushed between its four neighbors, with Afghanistan along the whole southern edge and Uzbekistan pinching its western side. Keep the outline compact and irregular, and remember that almost half the country is high Pamir mountain in the east, so the country reads as a rugged, compact block rather than a sprawling one, with the mountains crowding the borders.

Step 02

The dominant feature is the eastern highlands, because the Pamir mountains fill the southeast and push the border with China into a series of jagged steps. Sketch that eastern edge as a broken, mountainous line, while the western lowlands toward Uzbekistan are gentler, more open, and less broken, which makes the eastern half look heavier than the western half.

Step 03

Lock the shape with Afghanistan, because the southern border follows the Amu Darya river and the Pamir front, running in a long, fairly straight line. Draw that southern edge cleanly, keep China's jagged ridgeline to the east, and Tajikistan's position between its neighbors is fixed, and its place in Central Asia stays firmly anchored.

How Tajikistan Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Tajikistan's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Tajikistan is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
