Why Togo Looks the Way It Does

Fifty-seven kilometers of Gulf of Guinea shore, and roughly six hundred kilometers of length behind it: no other African state is so extreme a proportion of thin. Geography did not do this; empire did. In 1884 Germany planted a protectorate on this stretch of coast between the British Gold Coast and French Dahomey, then pushed its claim inland as far as the Sahel, because a north-south strip was the cheapest way to hold a port and a piece of the interior trade at once.

Germany lost everything in the First World War, and the League of Nations split Togoland in two, the western third to Britain and the remainder to France. A United Nations plebiscite in 1956 confirmed the western choice to join Ghana at independence, even though the Ewe people, whose language and markets the new line cut straight through, had argued for unity; French Togoland became the republic of Togo in 1960 with the strip that was left. Because the strip runs from the Sahel to the sea it crosses nearly every ecological zone West Africa has, rainforest at one end and semidesert at the other, which is why the country's farming looks like several countries' worth. The German port had been built at the western edge of the short coast, hard against the British line, which is why the towns of the littoral crowd so close to Ghana.

The result is a slat: two long sides nearly parallel, a stub of coast, a blunt cap against Burkina Faso. Keep the width constant from the sea to the Sahel and the drawing comes out right; the error to avoid is letting the strip widen as it goes north, which is the neighboring Benin's habit, not Togo's.

What is "Drawing Togo from Memory"?

Drawing Togo from memory means sketching Togo's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Togo sits in Africa and is rated ★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a manageable, compact shape for a first try. It connects to 3 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Togo is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Togo is one of the narrowest countries in the world, a long, thin strip running north from the coast. It is wedged between Ghana and Benin, with Burkina Faso capping the north and a short Gulf of Guinea shore.

How to Draw Togo from Memory

Step 01

Sketch Togo as an unusually long, thin rectangle that runs almost due north from the sea, far taller than it is wide. This is one of the narrowest countries on Earth, so keep the width to just a sliver and let the length dominate; the short southern coast is your starting anchor, and the strip stays about the same width end to end.

Step 02

Give the strip its disciplined shape with two long, nearly parallel sides that stay roughly the same width from coast to interior. Unlike most countries, Togo barely widens or narrows along its length; that stubborn uniformity is exactly what makes it look like a slat, so draw the two sides as if ruled, even if they are not perfectly straight.

Step 03

Lock the strip between its neighbors: Ghana presses the entire western side, Benin the entire eastern side, and Burkina Faso caps the northern end. Draw those three frontiers long and straight, and the thin fourth side along the Gulf of Guinea completes one of Africa's most recognizable narrow shapes, a sliver that is a gift to the memory.

Africa's narrowest sliver, a long thin strip running straight north from the Gulf of Guinea, wedged between Ghana and Benin like a slat in a fence.

How Togo Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Togo's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Togo is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
