Why Mauritius Looks the Way It Does
Volcanoes built Mauritius in the middle of an ocean, which is why nothing about the country was ever dictated by a land border. The island is the northern member of the Mascarenes, a line of volcanic summits rising from a submerged plateau that also carries Réunion and Rodrigues; crater rims and basalt plugs still stand in the interior, though the eruptions ceased many thousands of years ago. It lies roughly two thousand kilometers from the African mainland, closer to Madagascar but still hundreds of kilometers off.
There was nobody here to draw a border around. Arab and Malay sailors passed, the Dutch arrived in 1598 and named the island for a stadtholder, and the first colony began in 1638; the dodo, a flightless pigeon that had never met a mammal, was extinct by about 1681, within living memory of the first settlement. France took over in 1715, Britain in 1810, and independence came in 1968, all without a single frontier being surveyed. Sugar cane, planted on the young volcanic soils, covered most of the arable land for two centuries and still sets the look of the lowlands. The central plateau catches the southeast trades, so the windward east stays wet, the leeward west stays dry, and the harbor at Port Louis sits where the wind is calmest.
The reef did the shaping instead: a ring of coral encircles the island, and the lagoon between reef and shore sets the scallops of the coast. Small is the whole task of drawing it — a speck in the Indian Ocean, a lagoon ring, and the distant dot of Rodrigues well out to the east.

Mauritius is a small volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean, far east of Madagascar. The main island is a compact oval with a mountainous southwest, while tiny Rodrigues sits far to the east.
How to Draw Mauritius from Memory
Step 01
Sketch the main island as a compact, slightly lumpy oval that sits alone in the Indian Ocean, well east of Madagascar. Keep it small and chunky, about twice as long as it is wide, with no attached mainland; the island's whole identity is that of a lone volcanic speck, so do not let its scale drift toward continent-sized.
Step 02
Give the oval its character with the highlands in the southwest, where the land rises into a rugged, rainy mountain block that tapers to a gentler north. The coastline is scalloped by coral reefs and lagoons, so don't draw it perfectly smooth; let a few soft bays break the edge, and keep those mountains well off-center as the island's tallest point.
Step 03
Anchor the island's position with what surrounds it: Madagascar looms far to the west, and the Seychelles scatter far to the north across open water. Then drop the tiny dot of Rodrigues far to the east as Mauritius's distant outpost, keeping open sea between every landmass, and the whole small archipelago is placed.
A small oval teardrop far out in the Indian Ocean, ringed by reefs, with tiny Rodrigues trailing away to the east of the main island.
How Mauritius Is Scored
When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Mauritius's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:
Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.
Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.
Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.
The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.
Automated scoring for Mauritius is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
