Why Morocco Looks the Way It Does

Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, Africa ends in a corner, and Morocco is the only country on the continent with a shore on both. The two seas almost touch at the Strait of Gibraltar, some fourteen kilometers of water, and the outline follows from that pinch: a Mediterranean coast tucked behind the Rif, an Atlantic coast running south in a long, nearly straight line, and a block of land wedged between them, with the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla still holding bits of the northern shore.

The mountains do the geological work. The Rif is the European side of the story, crust pushed into Africa as Iberia converged, restless and prone to landslides; south of it the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas rise in succession, with Toubkal above four thousand meters the roof of North Africa. Those ranges catch the Atlantic's rain on their northern slopes and leave the pre-Saharan southeast dry, which is why the population and the old imperial cities sit in a band between the mountains and the sea: Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes and Rabat all lie within reach of Atlantic rain. The one easy crossing of the wall is the gap at Taza, and every army and railway that moved through the country has used it.

The southern border is the one that is not settled. Western Sahara, Spanish until 1975, is claimed and largely administered by Morocco, its eastern frontier a line the United Nations does not recognize, its interior divided by a berm of sand and rock built in the 1980s. Two seas and one disputed land frontier give three of the four edges, which is most of the drawing already done.

What is "Drawing Morocco from Memory"?

Drawing Morocco from memory means sketching Morocco's border on a blank canvas without looking at a map. Focus on the country's distinctive features and overall shape — that's what pushes your accuracy score up.

Morocco sits in Africa and is rated ★★★ out of 4 for drawing difficulty — a trickier outline with more detail to remember. It connects to 2 neighboring country pages on this site. Border comparison scoring for Morocco is coming soon — the shape tips below will get your mental map sharp before it lands.

Morocco sits on the northwest corner of Africa as a broad, roughly rectangular country. The Atlantic runs down its long western side, the Mediterranean borders the north, and its eastern frontier with Algeria angles inland toward the Sahara.

How to Draw Morocco from Memory

Step 01

Sketch Morocco as a broad, tilted rectangle filling Africa's far northwest corner. The long western side is a nearly straight Atlantic coastline, the top edge runs along the Mediterranean, and the whole block leans slightly so the northeast corner reaches out toward Spain; since Algeria is Morocco's only African land neighbor, the two coasts do most of the identifying work.

Step 02

Define the shape by where the two coasts meet: the Mediterranean shore turns a blunt corner at the Strait of Gibraltar, where Spain is only a few miles away, and the Atlantic coast then runs straight south. That corner and the long western drop are Morocco's signature; the Atlas Mountains rise behind them, but they are interior detail rather than outline.

Step 03

Fix the outline with the land frontier: Algeria's border runs down the eastern side, angling inland and down toward the Sahara, so Morocco is widest near the coast and tapers slightly to the southeast. Spain sits across the strait to the north, anchoring that top edge, and the slant is gentle, so do not exaggerate it into a sharp point.

How Morocco Is Scored

When you hit Reveal & compare, your sketch is measured against Morocco's real border, point by point, in the same canvas space. Three numbers come back:

Matched — the share of the real border your drawing covered. 100% means you traced every part of the outline.

Extra — how much of your drawing fell outside the true border. This catches sketches that are too big, mispositioned, or drifting off.

Missed — the border you didn't reach, the flip side of Matched.

The three combine into a single 0–100 accuracy score. The rating names give you a target: 80+ is Cartographer, 60+ is Border patrol, 40+ is Getting there, and below 40 is Try again.

Automated scoring for Morocco is coming soon. When it ships, drawing large and centered will be the fastest way to raise your score, because a small sketch overlaps less of the true border.
